What is smokeless tobacco?
Internationally, the term "smokeless tobacco" applies to a wide range of products whose common feature is that they do not have to be lit during use, as opposed to other tobacco products. Tar and carbon monoxide (smoking byproducts) are not found in smokeless tobacco.
The most common forms of smokeless tobacco originating from Europe are:
Twisted smokeless tobacco
Made of whole tobacco leaves that are twisted into a strand and cut in small pieces. Used in the mouth. Oliver Twist tobacco pellets are called twisted smokeless tobacco.
Snuff
Dried, pulverized tobacco snuffed into the nose.
Wet snuff
Pulverized tobacco to which water and sometimes flavorings are added. Used in the mouth. Known especially as "Swedish snuff".
Portion-packed snuff
Wet or dry snuff packed in small, porous bags (like tea bags). Used in the mouth. A common product in Sweden.
